This and That

Tom Atencio confirmed today with MMARATED that Andrei Arlovski will face Fedor Emelianenko in January. Atencio further went on to say that while Golden Boy will copromote the event that this will be an all MMA card.

"We sat down with them and couldn't come up with a main event boxing match that everyone wanted," Atenco said.

The card will feature 8 MMA bouts and the remainder of the card will be announced later this week.


In other news Affliction fighter Jay Hieron was tapped to face Bryson Kamaka at Xtreme Coutures Night of Champions II event however Kamaka failed a drug test forcing him off of the card. A possible replacement to fight Hieron is being sought, one name being thrown out there is Chris Kennedy. Additionally Mike Pyle who was also scheduled for the second Affliction event and defeated JJ Ambrose at the first is set to face Brian Gassaway on the same Night of Champions II card.

Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz told MMAJUNKIE that they are negotiating with Affliction to pin their LW champion Josh Thomson against Affliction fighter Chris Horodecki (12-1). No further details were given. Also Renato Sobral who defeated Mike Whitehead at Affliction BANNED will face Strikeforce LHW champion Bobby Southworth for the title on their November 21st card. Whitehead on the other hand is set to headline the Affliction M-1 Challenge to take place in Kansas City on October 29th but no opponent has been announced.

On the Golden Boy side of things Bernard Hopkins will face undefeated middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik on October 18. They are copromoting the card with Top Rank promotions and will feature an undercard that will see WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano defend his title against top contender Billy Dib, undefeated NABO bantamweight champion Abner Mares battles Luis Melendez and in a WBC middleweight title elimination bout, Marco Antonio Rubio takes on Enrique Ornelas.
